1. According to Wilson "More than almost any other subject,folklore must be experienced directly in actual life, as I experienced there narratives to be properly understood."(P.226)
Discuss the pertinence of this assessment in documenting folklore.

2. Discuss the meaning and function of "Megastructures and Mediating structures" in Mechling's argument.

3. What are the three broad categories Wilson describes that are helpful in asking and looking for the traditions of a group? Why are they so important in documenting and understanding folk cultures?

4.Romantic Nationalism aspires to create a view that may or may not be consistent with folk reality. Explain.

5. How does the style of the "Revenge of the sky people" compare with that of" Seal and her younger brother"? In your answer take into account plot. literary and cultural resources.

6.Oring p.124 argues that there are "three narrative categories regularly distingushed by folklorists... " Name there three narratives, characterize each one, and explain the time frame involve.

7. Folklore research requires not only the collection of the item but also the texture, that is the environment in which it was collected. Why is this important? Explain.

It needs a complete description as well as an interpretation of the example, and produces a document that effectively communicates what the example is, how you studied it, and what you regard its importance to be.

This class is an American Folklore class; we have studied books such as:

Meyerhoff, Number Our Days
Santos, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation
Sims and Stephens, Living Folklore “Sims”
Turner: I Heard It Through the Grapevine: Rumor in African-American Culture

None of the above books are a topic source for this paper more of a reference as well as a understanding of what type of paper and information is needed in the paper.

This is our final paper, and should be able to connect remarks to the above books if possible Min. 2700 words.

As far as a topic is concerned, I was thinking Blue Ridge Folklife: By: Ted Olson would be a book example unless you could provide one more appropriate.
