Essay Instructions: I need a book response from the book Hard Work by Fantasia and Voss. Should address the following two questions-
1.)According to the Authors, why have labor unions struggled in the U.S.? How does their explanation resonate with major contemporary perspectives in the field of socail movements?
2.)What do the authors have to say in regard to the possibilities and limits of labor union revitalization in the U.S.? How does their view resonate with the major contemporary perspectives in the field of social movements?

This paper should be 4-5 pages long and only use the sources from this book.

Essay Instructions: Questions: (3 pages each)

(1) By focusing on the main character (or the female narrator) in Assia Djebar's Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade, examine the relation between language and identity. In particular, analyze how language helps the main character construct her identity as a woman. Highlight how her experience with language shaped her awareness of herself and the world surrounding her.


(2)Compare how the marginalized in Anita Desai's " the Rooftop Dwellers" and A.B Yehoushua's "Facing the forests" resist marginalization. Identify first those who are marginalized and how they are marginalized. Then you should move to the focus of your response, which is examining and comparing the methods of resistance in both texts. Based on whatever criteria you establish, is resistance effective, useless advised or else?


Guidelines:

(1) Write a 3-pages each on response, using double-spaced Times New Roman 12.

(2) Avoid plot, character or event summaries. The exam is not meant to test your summarizing abilities. Rather, it is meant to test your ability to analyze themes, to establish connections, to detect images, to go beyond the apparent and the surface meanings and to examine and build ideas. Simply put, focus on textual interpretation.

(3) Avoid stating the obvious, general and clich?d statements. Be specific, focused and unique.

(4) Do not do any research beyond the textbook but rather analyze on the text.

(5) Keep quotations to a minimum. When ever you can, refer only to page numbers (and line numbers in case of poetry) avoid quoting extensively .If you have to quote poetry, use the full line on the page and separate the verses by slashes .I want to see your analysis not quotations.

2. What role have racism, sexism, and xenophobia played in the history of the labor movement? How can unions overcome racism, sexism, and xenophophia among their members?
