Essay question: "To what extent were Pachucos/as criminalized in America during the World War 2 era (1940's-1950's)? Is this still an issue facing Mexican American youth today? Explain.
We should try to use examples from the textbook: From Indians to Chicanos, third edition by James Diego Vigil (ISBN 13: 978-1-57766-740-7). We can also use examples from personal experiences/understanding and/or other websites, books, etc that can support the essay.

CHOSEN TOPIC SPECIFICALLY: GANGS (make sure it is about gangs but written from an ethnic studies perspective)

This research paper should be a way to explain the field of ETHNIC STUDIES to a general audience. It should demonstrate my ability to identify issues central to ethnic studies, and to conduct ETHNIC STUDIES analysis that is specific and concrete.
Detail the complexities of the chosen topic (GANGS) by citing a minimum of 3 strong outside sources(books, journals, scholarly websites). Use the sources to help articulate, compare and contrast different viewpoints on the topic (at least three different view points).
HISTORICAL CONTEXT: How did the topic/issue come about Why? Who was/has been involved?
DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS: Identify major stakeholders, their interests/ideologies. Be sure that the analysis of the viewpoints connects to ETHNIC STUDIES! (i.e., for gangs, two of the three viewpoints could be 1)the law and 2)the wealthy people of America)

Essay Instructions: No internet sites may be used as a reference source unless it is an electronic copy from a paper print. The actual topic is ethnic studies. The purpose of the paper is to critically address and compare/contrast asian americans and africian americans in terms of 1) how they came to the US (by what route and means they came), 2)why they came, and 3)how they were treated upon arrival.

This does not need to be written in essay form simply answer each question in (2 paragraphs max) in short responses.

1. How did segregation affect cultural exchange between different ethnic groups in 1940's Los Angeles? How were these cultural exchanges determined by the social relations of the time? What effect did the "ecology" of communities have on youth identity up to the present?

2. What are some ethnic boundaries? How do they form? How are they maintained and what impact do they have on Ethnic Studies?

3. Pg 60 of Alvarez article on Zoot suits (will be emailed) states: "if only for a moment, they refused to be good workers and reclaimed their own bodies and time by valuing leisure." What forms of political consciousness today are similar/ different from earlier eras (1940s-present)? How are they related to citizenship, claiming space in a global economic context?

4. What do "quebradita" clubs teach us about societal hierarchies and how young people develop political consciousness? why was the style so popular in the U.S. and less so in Mexico?

5. Why did the study on quebradita focus on dance and not music? Why did this mass media form produce different cultural meanings in different states? Why was its "border" origin appealing to so many and what did it suggest about how we think of borders?
