In a 4 page essay (with in-text cites and a seperate bibliography), discuss how authenticity is constructed today in popular media, and what tensions, resistance, and ruptures it creates.

Here is the specific topic:
- Eric Clapton''s employment of the blues began with the work of B.B.King, but as Clapton discovered that style''s ancestry, he worked back to the country blues - particularly of Robert Johnson.
- By appropriating, by exhibiting trust in and making available to a broader audience, the patterns of performance exemplified by black blues artists (including Johnson), Clapton authenticates them.
- They authenticate him, too.

Ask yourself:
- How is authenticity constructed? Remember, authenticity is ascribed, not inscribed.

(6) Popular Music (25,26,27,28) - Compare Big Mama Thornton or Little Richard's recording of Hound Dog with that of Elvis. In what ways does each resemble the other and what ways are they different?

Your assignment submission needs to include:

1. History and/or Manufacturers:
Information about well-known makers and the instrument's history. If you choose the voice, you can obviously skip the manufacturers, and concentrate on the history.
2. Famous Performers:
This one is quite self evident. You are not restricted to any particular period or style. For example, if you favorite instrument is guitar, you can choose Eric Clapton and John Williams.
3. Famous composers:
Another self evident one. Again, you are not restricted to any particular period or style. One example from the class is the Leonard Bernstein site at the Library of Congress. Did Bernstein, for example, write any pieces for your favorite instrument?
4. Repertoire:
