Summary
Module one discusses the role of evidence-based practice in advanced nursing. The role of the nursing research question in nursing research is also explored. Nursing research is the systematic study of issues important to nursing practice. The research is based on studies that provide empirical evidence regarding appropriate nursing practice. Without nursing research, many forms of tradition, convention, and hearsay have provided treatments that are ineffective or inappropriate. In nursing research, two paradigms drive the research process. Nursing research is the effort of discovering information that will drive treatment and provide objective information about nursing decisions. The utilization of research in nursing is defined by the role of the research in providing care that is appropriate and effective. When assessing nursing research for implementation into practice a nursing hierarchy is frequently used that will assess the value of the research to practice. In spite of the many benefits of evidence-based practice, there are barriers to implementation. These barriers include the limited nature of nursing research, which has only been recognized as viable research since the last quarter of the 20th century. Synthesizing nursing research into evidence-base practice is desired outcome. For instance, the practitioner may consult clinical guidelines for recommendations for best practices--- these clinical guidelines come from nursing research. A nurse educator may implement evidence-based teaching strategies based on current research about effective teaching methods.
