What are some of the major problems caregivers face? Why do adults feel guilty when they have to relocate their aged parents?

According to the textbook there are four major levels of tasks that the elderly may need assistance from a caregiver and each plays a major role in the lives of the elderly.
1. Instrumental tasks, which include housekeeping and maintenance of automobiles and the yard as well as business affairs.
2. Expressive tasks, which include emotional support and socializing with the elderly so they do not feel alone.
3. Cognitive tasks, which include assistance with scheduling of appointments and reminding the elderly to take their medications.
4. Tasks of daily living, which include eating, bathing, waling, dressing, toileting and getting in and out of chairs or their bed.
It is a challenging time in the life of the elderly when they first identify or realize that they will need help with tasks that were once part of their everyday life. Once family members of the elderly realize that these individuals will need extra help and assistance they will try to provide them with the needed attention and assistance, which gives them the role of informal caregivers. Informal caregivers usually are adult children or other family members of the elderly that will provide unpaid care or assistance. The role of the informal caregiver is providing unpaid assistance or care to their elderly family member who needs help either emotionally, physically, financially or mentally. Although, most caregivers of the elderly are willing to help in providing assistance and support many of them face challenges such as, decreased personal freedom, lack of privacy, constant demands that may drain them of time and energy, resentment towards their siblings for not sharing in the caregiving role, change of lifestyle, less free time and increase in financial burden. Many of the caregivers feel guilty for not being able to provide all of the needed help and they are aware of the fact that the end of the caregiving responsibilities will end in either placing the elderly in a home or their death. Many caregivers feel guilty because they may have to ask their spouse for help or assistance in taking care of the elderly or in other caregiving roles. Many adults feel guilty when they have to relocate their elderly parents in to a nursing home or a group home because they do not feel good about making the elderly parents spend the last years of their lives away from their home and family.

Being a care giver is quite a daunting task. It is rewarding but at the same time very challenging. Most elders are able to take care of themselves but there is a significant amount who still need help in their activities of daily living. There are four different levels of task which are used to identify where the elders may need help. It is the care giver's duty to analyze and see what area to concentrate in.
The areas are, instrumental tasks such as house keeping transportation and assistance with business affairs. Expressive task like emotional support socializing ,cognitive tasks as in assistance that involves reminders like taking medication or monitoring health condition and finally tasks of daily living like dressing ,bathing ,feeding and the ability to get in and out of bed.
When these functional activities have been identified the care giver now has the task of determining what best fits the elder in their charge. Care givers are also faced with the challenge of deciding if to relocate their parents or elders into smaller homes or homes that have wheelchair access or ramps. In some cases caregivers are faced with the dilemma of relocating their parents to another city of moving them into nursing homes.
Caregivers some times also end up being sick and this is from the stress of taking care of their sick or old parents.
They are also faced with issues like decreased personal freedom. Elderly care can be very demanding especially when the elder is a patient. They have to make multiple trips to the pharmacy , doctor's appointments and hospital.
Also lack of privacy ,constant demand on their time and energy. In the case were the elders are living with them, they have to rush from work or school because the elders can not be trusted to be alone for long periods of time. There had been an incident where a caregiver was asleep and was woken up by the police 3.30am in the morning. Her dad who had Alzheimer had wandered out into the streets, fell and fractured his leg.
There is also increased financial burden and also the resentment that they do not get any help from their siblings. Some families do contribute financially towards the up keep of their elders but in some instances the burden is on one individual. And this does build resentment and tension between siblings.

Adults do feel some amount of guilt because in most cases the elders do not want to be relocated. They get constant calls from their parents how unhappy and depressed there are in the new location and how they want to go back home. There have been instances where the children had promised not to relocate their parents into nursing homes but have been advised medically to do so. Care givers sometime feel guilty because they know they are taking the elders from their familiar environment into a whole new life style. Also the elders will not have the privacy and routine they had been accustom to.
