Title: Healthcare pricing

Total Pages: 1 Words: 369 References: 3 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Economic theory suggests that hospitals, like other companies providing a service, should set their prices based on market factors such as:

* Product differentiation and capacity

* Barriers to entry

* Level of existing competition

* Perceived value to the customer

However, within the healthcare industry, prices are not determined by the laws of supply and demand as they are in other industries. Keeping the above points in mind:

1. Explain how economic theory is not applicable to hospitals and other healthcare service providers. Cite your sources for your response.

2. Price transparency and consumer-driven healthcare will change the way hospitals price their services in the future. Provide a research-based argument for whether or not this will actually occur and why or why not.
