Assignment booklet:

TMA 02 (cut-off date: 24 January 2012)
In this TMA you are asked to produce a report that assesses the claim that economic growth can lead to healthier and happier societies. Your report must include relevant examples, illustrations or case studies in support of the points you make. You should try to select and use different forms of evidence from the module materials that either support the claim that economic growth can lead to healthier and happier societies or contradict it. Report writing is an important academic skill which is also widely used and valued in the world of work and indeed many other spheres of social life.
This assignment is worth 30 per cent of your total marks for the module and it is the first and only report you will be asked to write. Guidance about the key features of this report is given in the ?Student notes? section below.
This assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to show what you have learnt from the ?Material lives? strand of Exploring Social Lives and from the associated skills work you have done. Although report writing is different from writing an academic essay, you are building upon skills you have already begun to develop, such as taking notes, writing in your own words and planning assignments. The skill of planning is particularly important for writing a good report. We do not require you to produce a plan for this assignment, but we strongly advise you to do so as this will help you in structuring and writing the report itself. Please note, however, that you do not need to submit your plan with your report.
The word limit for this TMA is 1250 words:
Writing in a report format, identify and use evidence to assess the claim that economic growth can lead to healthier and happier societies.
Student notes
The main source of information for this TMA is Chapter 1 of Exploring Social Lives although relevant material is also contained in Chapter 3 and, to a lesser extent, Chapter 2 of Exploring Social Lives. Chapter 1 begins by defining what an ?economy? is and how the UK economy can be characterised. Section 2 examines the relationship between economic change and the environment, while Section 3 examines the relationship between economic changes and happiness and well-being. Issues of definition and measurement are also examined in this chapter and it is important to have an understanding of these issues when answering the TMA question.
The audio ?Economic wealth and happiness? will be a crucial source of information for this TMA, and the ?Reflections on ?Material lives?? discussion will also be helpful. You should also listen to the skills audio programme ?Different types of academic writing? which provides some useful advice about how to approach report writing. You will also find the online activities associated with this strand helpful, particularly Online Activity 6B which specifically refers to how to write a report.
You are asked to provide a report that shows the connections between economic growth, health and happiness; to provide relevant examples, illustrations and case studies; and to select and use different forms of

evidence. There is no single best way of doing this but we suggest that the following points should be borne in mind: . Think carefully about the structure of your report and make sure that this
is reflected in its contents page. The contents page should include the
main headings of your report and show what you are going to cover.
Make sure that the structure addresses the TMA question.
. You are not being asked to write a continuous, discursive essay. You can
use headings and subheadings, short and concise sentences and perhaps
bulleted lists of key points for emphasis. Only use other forms of
presentation such as diagrams, tables and so on if they are useful and
really help to enhance the content of your report.
. Take care to identify and select relevant examples, illustrations and case
studies from the module materials. Think about where you will use these
in your report and about how best to identify and present different forms
of evidence.
. Good answers will clearly show a variety of examples of the relationship
between economic growth and healthier and happier societies.
. Finally, although there are no separate marks for presentation itself, this
is an important part of a well-structured, carefully and concisely written
answer and will therefore be rewarded. Think about your content first and
foremost, then about your presentation of that content. If you find your
presentation is awkward or ?messy? in the sense that it does not flow
coherently or there are obvious gaps, this will probably mean that there
is something missing or inaccurate in the report. In such cases, go back
to the title, break it down into the tasks it is asking of you, and check the
material you have identified and selected to include within your report.
Have you missed something? Consider what changes you need to make,
then go back to the materials if necessary and try again to select what
you need, and then reorganise the structure of your report.

Fribbance, I. (2009) ?The changing UK economy: making a greener and happier society??, in Bromley, S., Clarke, J., Hinchliffe, S. and Taylor, S. (eds) Exploring Social Lives, Milton Keynes, The Open University.
If you cite a source that is mentioned in the module materials but that you haven?t actually read yourself, this should be presented as a secondary reference. An example of a short secondary reference is: (ONS cited in Fribbance, 2009, p. 31).
For the long reference, you simply show the publication details of the source that you have read:
Fribbance, I. (2009) ?The changing UK economy: making a greener and happier society?? in Bromley, S., Clarke, J., Hinchliffe, S. and Taylor, S. (eds) Exploring Social Lives, Milton Keynes, The Open University.
Note: the references above are not necessarily those you will need for this assignment
To bring together the advice on report writing already given in these notes, the online activity and the skills audio, you may find the below table, FAQs and sample contents page helpful.
Although there are various types of reports, this assignment requires you to write what is called a descriptive report. This is sometimes referred to as an information report. The structure will consist of the following sections: Section Purpose Description
Title Asks the question(s) Contains key words about content and process.
Contents Outlines the structure of the report and lists headings / sections Includes the main headings of your report which show what you are going to cover.
Theaim of this sectionistoshowataglance how the report is structured. You can write the contents section after completing the rest of the report if you prefer.
Introduction Defines the purpose and scope of the report This gives essential background information. It focuses on and perhaps defines the key words and outlines the plan or route map of what is to follow.
Main body Presents the description or information Interprets or evaluates the information, if appropriate This is the most detailed part of the report. The information should be divided into sections, under headings (and subheadings if necessary), which should be numbered or bulleted. Each section should have its own purpose and be organised around a key point of description.
Each point of description should be supported by evidence and examples from the module materials.
Conclusions Summarises (in a few sentences) the main points of description or information. Shows how you have answered the question.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to include an abstract? Many reports do include an abstract (sometimes referred to as an executive summary) but you are not asked to provide an abstract for this assignment.
Do I need to include references? Some reports do not include references but it is good practice to do so. We ask, therefore, that you provide references for any sources you refer to within your report in the format required by DD132.
What counts in the word count? The word count covers everything except the title, contents page and the references at the end of your assignment.
Do I need to include appendices? Many reports do include appendices but this is not a requirement for this assignment. We would also advise you not to include footnotes.
Can I include graphics, diagrams and tables? You can include these but you will not necessarily get extra marks for their inclusion unless they help to support the points you are making. Do not use graphics just for the sake of it ? this doesn?t impress. Use them if they add to your report; for example, they might summarise a large amount of information succinctly.
Is writing a report the same as writing an essay? As above, much of the preparation for writing a report is the same as that for an essay in terms of analysing the question, identifying relevant arguments and evidence, planning the answer, and so on. Both essays and reports require you to write in full sentences rather than note form although a report is characterised by short, concise paragraphs and bullet points where applicable. What differs is the format of presentation ? reports are more explicitly structured via the use of headings, and subheadings which are numbered to help readers quickly access particular issues at particular points within the report.
Sample contents page
Note: this is NOT the contents page you will use in this assignment
Below is a sample contents page for a report on the impact of recent economic change on the UK. Your contents page will of course not look exactly like this and it may have fewer or more headings and sub-headings, but this will give you an idea of what to aim for. The contents page should include the main headings of your report and show what you are going to cover. If you think of the contents page as a sort of essay plan to begin with, this will help to ensure that your report answers the question and is structured clearly and coherently. Think carefully about the structure of your report and make sure that this is reflected in its contents page.

Write a report on the impact of recent economic change on the UK.
