Instructions for Eastern College Essay Examples

Essay Instructions: One often hears "eastern" and "western" religions are very different in character. Do you agree? In this final essay you should assess this claim through a comparison of a feature common to at least two "eastern" religions (Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism) and two "western" religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). You might want to choose your feature from Huston Smith's aspects of religion: authority, ritual, speculation, tradition, grace, and mystery. For "eastern" religions you should discuss one Chinese (Confucianism or Taoism) and one Indian (Hinduism or Buddhism) tradition. One of the "western" traditions you discuss should be Islam. Thus your essay will focus on a common theme but discuss it with regard to four distinct traditions. You are to draw on the description of these traditions in our text, your web quest, and your personal observations. Make sure you cite both the text and online sources appropriately. (4 pages, double-spaced, 12 point type).

Topic:
Eastern religion and American Pop Culture

Narrowed Topic:
The growing interest of Eastern religion and American Pop Culture

Motivating Question:
How does Eastern religion reveal itself in American Pop Culture?

Secondary Questions:
1. Is there religion behind the scenes in movie films?
2. What makes certain movies such as Harry Potter so interesting, without knowing about the spiritual messages?
3. Who is making these kinds of films?
4. Why are such movies so popular?
5. How long has this been around?

Thesis Idea:
I have been trying to figure out a good topic and I came to this one. I have known for quite some time how religion has a lot to do with behind the scenes of movies we watch. Do many other people know about this?, probably not. For example, when Harry Potter came out in the movie theater, it was a hit for just about every kid I knew that had no religious background or upbringing. I don?t want to be offensive about this either, so that is why I decided to do a research paper on it. Pull out facts and opinions.
I feel that this assignment will keep me busy and hopefully help me expand my knowledge of writing.
