Essay Instructions: BOOK REVIEW OF BOB GREENE'S "DUTY: A FATHER,HIS SON AND THE MAN WHO WON THE WAR". REVIEWS SHOULD BEGIN WITH A FORMAL CITATION FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE AUTHOR'S INTENT AND THE BOOK'S CONTENT; THEN AN ANALYSIS OF THE BOOKS RELIABILITY AND CREDIBILITY. THEN A CRITIQUE OF THE USEFULNESS OF THE BOOK AND FINALLY A CONCLUSION ABOUT THE OVERAL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BOOK. A BOOK REVIEW IS AN ESSAY. IT HAS BOTH ANALYTICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE ELEMENTS. THE ESSAY IS NOT A SUMMARY OF THE BOOK. IT REQUIRES THE REVIEWER TO CRITIQUE THE WHOLE WORK AND DRAW CONCLUSIONS FROM THE BOOK. STUDENTS SHOULD THINK OF THE BOOK REVIEW AS AN ANALYTICAL OR PERSUASIVE ESSAY WHICH FOLLOWS GOOD ESSAY FORMAT. PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. WHAT DOES GREENE MEAN BY A SENSE OF "DUTY"? DO YOU THINK, BASED ON YOUR READING, THAT AMERICANS FEEL LESS OF A SENSE OF "DUTY" TODAY?

Essay Instructions: Assessment 1 Document Analysis (40%)

Analyse the Western Australian Duty of Care for Students policy document from the Department of Education (all states have similar documents, however, for a common reference point the WA policy will be used in the assignment)
(see http://www.det.wa.edu.au/policies/detcms/policy-planning-and-accountability/policies-framework/policies/duty-of-care-for-students.en?oid=au.edu.wa.det.cms.contenttypes.Policy-id-3783072)

Discuss the policy in the context of a local primary school, particularly how it impacts on the activities of teachers and how they deal with their students, with other professionals and/or with parents. Your report should describe the main elements of the policy, frequently citing from it, and should contain the following:
? What was the apparent rationale for writing the policy?
? What sorts of issues does the policy cover?
? Why is the policy important?
? Who is subject to the policy's requirements?

The policy will be used to address the following three scenarios;

1. A number of students arrive early to school at about 7:40 am each morning. The first teachers usually arrive about thirty minutes later. Most teachers are aware of the fact that students do arrive early at the school and have been doing so for a long time

2. A teacher privately recruits some of his students for his community football team to play at a near - by oval after school. The team consists of many students from the teacher's school, so they decide to wear school colours and refer to the team by the school's name in general discussions.

3. A student teacher in her first school experience is asked to watch the class while the class teacher goes to the office approximately 50 metres away to phone a parent about a sick child in the room. There are known to be certain disruptive children in the class and the student teacher has not demonstrated competence in managing this class.

What are the implications of these scenarios in terms of the Duty of Care policy of WA? Describe measures that a school and teacher could take to ensure that the requirements of the policy document are met.
What are the implications for all parties concerned according to the policy?
In your report, you should cite particular sections from the policy document that gives specific detail about what a school and teacher should do in this situation, or similar examples.
