Choose two poems from those you have been assigned to read for this class and write a 500-1000 word essay that compares and contrasts some of the basic elements of poetry (such as persona and tone, the various types of poetic language, and considerations involved in identifying poetic forms) the authors of these poems have used to get across their themes to their readers.
As with all close reading of literature, the main purpose for such a consideration will be to gain insight into the author's themes. Essays of this type work best when the poems selected have at least one feature in common, but one or more other features that are clearly different. Your focus should be to decide how the similarities and differences in these works lead the reader to the specific ideas that the poets seek to express.
