Instructions for Driving College Essay Examples

Title: Driving Drunk is Dangerous

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1296 Sources: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: This is my teachers instructions

Write a 4 ? 7 page position paper. In other words, make an argument for a particular point of view. A position paper clearly takes a stand on something about which reasonable people could disagree. Consider the following thesis statements:

Driving drunk is dangerous.

The first one takes a stand, but who is going to disagree? The second one has to do with a controversial issue, but it is merely stating a fact, not taking a stand.

This thesis statement has potential because it takes a stand on an issue about which there is vigorous disagreement. Furthermore, the stand it takes, that there is reasonable evidence, is probably one that could be supported in a paper of this length. The writer would have to first define reasonable and then show how his evidence meets that criteria, but this seems possible.

In a position paper, you should also understand some of the major objections to the viewpoint you are trying to assert. These objections ought to be acknowledged and addressed, either openly or implicitly, so that the reader has a sense of seeing the whole picture and not just your particular bias.

Support your paper with research. Use at least 4 sources within the text of your writing (you may consult many more) to help make your case. The sources you use need not all be in agreement with you. Sometimes you can counter an opposing viewpoint best by stating that position and explaining why you disagree with it. Your in-text citations should include summaries, paraphrases, and quotations; and you should include a Works Cited page at the end. Use MLA format (which I will explain fully in the weeks to come) for all your documentation.
