1. The following question is for Jekyll vs. Hyde and the City.
The task is to find three different passages that describe the city of London. In your discussion, examine the relationship between the city and the character of Jekyll/Hyde. For instance, how does the portrayal of city life run parallel to story of Jekyll and Hyde?

2.The task is to analyze the character of Dr. Henry Jekyll by using concrete quotations from the text.
That is, it needs to garner a minimum of five different quotations (each member contributes one quotation). The quotations should tell or show the character of Dr. Henry Jekyll. AND each quotation must have the accompanying analyses.

“It was on the moral side, and in my own person, that I learned to recognize the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both” (104, Chapter 10: Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case).
Dr. Jekyll begins this experiment wishing to be rid of guilt. He believed that he was equally radical in both of his moral and immoral nature. What Stevenson shows us however is that guilt keeps us from succumbing towards our immoral sides. Dr. Jekyll relishes in becoming Mr. Hyde because he is free from his guilt only as Mr. Hyde. That freedom becomes too tempting and he slowly transforms into Mr. Hyde involuntarily more often. Dr. Jekyll’s desire to become Mr. Hyde with the knowledge of the full horror that Mr. Hyde is capable of, and the exponential frequency with which these transformations occur causes me to believe that Dr. Jekyll subconsciously chooses to lose his humanity towards the end of the story. Mr. Hyde, in contrast, had the choice of killing himself or raging out of control against the police and being subsequently hanged. He chooses to commit suicide rather than losing control. I believe that Mr. Hyde reflected on his actions and came to the conclusion that he did not want to face the consequences of his actions in public or that he did not want to continue living without the possibility of ever feeling guilt as Dr. Jekyll. If this was the case, than it is Mr. Hyde who has more morality towards the end of the story. This shift of morality from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde towards the end of the story also shows the duality of man as they are at a constant opposite from one another.

1. In the last chapter "Henry Jekyll's Full Statement of the Case," Dr. Jekyll states,
"And it changed that the direction of my scientific studies, which led wholly towards the mystic and the transcendental, reacted and shed a strong light on this consciousness of the perennial war among my members. With every day, and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and the intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to the truth, by whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two. I say two, because the state of my own knowledge does not pass beyond that point. Others will follow, others will outstrip me on the same lines; and I hazard the guess that man will be ultimately known for a mere polity of multifarious, incongruous and independent denizens. I, for my part, from the nature of my life, advanced infallibly in one direction and in one direction only. If was on the moral side, and in my own person, that I learned to recognize the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of two natures that contended in the filed of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, if was only because I was radically both." (104)
Write an analysis of 300 words for this passage. In your analysis, you can draw on Ed Cohen’s article and examine the social and political meanings in the quote. You can also analyze how this quote defines or undoes the readers’ understanding of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

2. Using Google or another comprehensive search engine, locate an image or a news item from our contemporary popular culture that resonates with a theme or scene from the fiction The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde. Since posting an image or embedding a video might make your Word file too big to upload, you can simply post the link to the news reportage, the video, or the image. Then, write an analysis of 300 words explaining how this particular image or news item connects with Stevenson’s story. You must demonstrate in your analysis your familiarity with the text of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde. For instance, you should incorporate quoted passages from the text or make specific references to key scenes in the fiction.
