Your answer should demonstrate your mastery of any assigned course materials relevant to the question, and it should also go beyond those materials to show that you have thought about the question yourself. 1. What are the consequences of the division of labor in modern industrial society? In your answer, compare and contrast the work of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Georg Simmel and what they each thought about division of labour. In what ways are these theorists indebted to important Enlightenment thinkers?

Your answer MUST include at least THREE references from the textbook MASTERS OF SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT IDEAS IN HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT by Lewis A. Coser. You must cite the passages from the reading that you refer to in your answer, and I do not care which citation format you use. For example, (Coser: 375). A citation can be a quotation, or, a reference to a portion of the text where the point you are talking about is discussed. All citations must be from the editions used in this course

You may refer to readings other than those assigned in the course if you think this will add to your argument but these also must be cited as sources and included a bibliography or works cited page (you do not need a works cited page if you only cite the Coser book). Furthermore, sources outside course readings do not count toward your required references.

You must define theoretical concepts. You may use quotations from any of the readings to clarify the meaning of what is suggested by the concepts. In other words, avoid using concepts such as ?anomie? or ?solidarity? without specifying what you mean by these important features of Durkheim?s analysis. Do not rely on the dictionary but rather apply what you have learned in class.
