In Death in Venice, Thomas Mann repeatedly takes inspiration from the Nietzschean categories of the Apollonian and the Dionysian in order to tell the story of the writer Gustav von Aschenbach. Nietzsche's primary aesthetic treatise, The Birth of Tragedy, postulated the existence of two distinct and opposing artistic tendencies, which Nietzsche associated with two different gods of Greek mythology, Apollo and Dionysus. How do Apollonian and Dionysian elements in Mann’s narrative surface, and how do they contribute to the narrative’s overall themes?

Essay Instructions: Where are the doubles in this novella (Death in Venice), show the details Mann uses to indicate the double. Why do they appear, and what do they reveal to us about Aschenbach?

But an internet source can also be considered hard copy if there is a monthly publication of the source i.e.: an online magazine, online book, online journal etc... that has an actual hardcopy that can back it up. Also, 7-10 sources may sound like a lot, but the sources can be on historical meaning of objects, colors, clothing etc... through out history (ex: there is a man in Death in Venice who has red hair and freckles, through history red hair and freckles has been symbolic of the devil or evil). And of course there can be one or two sources on Thomas Mann''s life. >>
