Essay Instructions: compare and contrast the three components that make up the criminal justice system (police, courts, and corrections). You will also create an organizational chart on the management hierarchy of one of the components. Finally, you will reflect upon what techniques could be used to influence positive change in the criminal justice system.

Research the questions below for each of the three criminal justice system components: police, criminal courts, and correctional agencies. Prepare a table or chart that compares and contrasts the information you gather on the components. For example:

The table or chart that you prepare must address all of the following questions for each of the components. A reference page must be attached to your table citing the resource(s) used to conduct your research.

What is the management structure of the component?
What are the differences between the organizations in this component as compared to the other two?
What are the roles, functions, and practices of the different personnel within the component?
For the various personnel positions included in the component, are there guidelines established that outline their administrative duties?
What are some of the most important rights offered to the personnel in this component?
How do the various personnel roles in the component impact the criminal justice system as a whole?
What issues or challenges do the various types of personnel encounter when carrying out their duties?
Part II ? Management Hierarchy Organizational Chart
Choose one of the three criminal justice components researched above and create an administrative organizational chart that illustrates its management hierarchy and structure.

Part III ? Techniques for Influencing Criminal Justice System Change
For this part of the assignment, you are to reflect upon the knowledge gained during Parts I and II above and submit written responses to the questions listed below:

What problems, constraints, or issues did you notice within the police, criminal courts, and correctional agency components in terms of their current administration practices?
What administrative techniques would you suggest in order to improve upon current practices and positively influence the overall criminal justice system? How could industry personnel implement your suggested changes? Explain.

Essay Instructions: Ethics in Criminal Procedure

Prepare a paper detailing the significance of ethics in criminal justice and criminal procedure. Please be sure to include all of the following elements in your paper:

Summarize your working definition of ethics.
Define ethics within criminal justice.
Compare ethics in law vs. real life.
Examine the need for equal treatment of all people in the criminal justice system.
Identify the major safeguards provided by criminal procedure.
Use at least two scholarly sources in addition to this week?s readings to support your findings.

Essay Instructions: The content is to be an overview of the criminal justice system and a description of these roles:

police officer or federal agent
district attorney's office or the United States Attorney's Office
defense counsel
federal, state, and local judges/magistrates
Discuss the stages (investigative, prosecutorial) at which each of the above interacts with a criminal defendant. Specify the roles of each and explain the process by which a suspect becomes a criminal defendant. Consider the following questions for your paper:

When do you think the prosecutor's office should become involved in a case (prearrest or postarrest)?
Do you think involvement by a prosecutor in the original stages of an investigation is a good idea?
Can a defense attorney ever become involved in a case prior to indictment or arrest?
When does a judge or magistrate's function begin? In addition, briefly discuss the sources of criminal law.
This assignment will also be assessed using additional criteria provided here.

Essay Instructions: ?When all is said and done, the current criminal justice system is about as fair and effective as we can reasonably expect?. Comment on this with reference to strengths and/or weaknesses of the system.

The following points may assist students respond to this question:
? To respond to this question, students should provide an overview of the criminal justice system and examine what the concepts 'fair' and 'effective' mean. Are these concepts themselves incompatible (i.e.: increasing fairness inevitably reduces effectiveness).
? Students should then examine the strengths of the system which advance the proposition that the system is fair and effective (i.e.: the system may be considered fair because of the separation of powers, police discretion, and various rights such as the right to remain silent, the right to trial by jury, etc).
? Then students may examine evidence which suggests that the criminal justice system is not as fair as it could be (i.e.: miscarriages of justice, improper use of discretion, Indigenous overrepresentation, etc).
? Whether the system is effective depends on what its goals are - so these would need to be examined (i.e. deterrence, rehabilitation, etc). A good source that provides information about how effective the criminal justice system is provided in the Report on Government Services by the Productivity Commission.
? Finally, students should make a judgement about whether the system is as fair and effective as it could be. This should be based on the evidence.
