Essay Instructions: Comparative Analysis of Two Films

Description:
4 Pages, Single Spaced, Times New Roman font, plus separate MLA-format Works Cited page.

Skills:
Focus research inquiry, define an interpretive context, synthesize sources, develop and support a thesis to enter a critical scholarly conversation, comparatively analyze visual and critical text.

Films:
One scene (4-6 minute segment) from the film Inception.
One scene (4-6 minute segment) from the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Sources:
“Panopticism” by Michel Foucault
“From Ways of Seeing” by John Berger

Assignment:
Combine close reading of cinematic details and your own research to make an argument about what we can learn from two films that are, in effect, representing similar issues. More specifically, what do these films reveal their particular cultural moments? Or, what do you learn by placing these two films in conversation with one other.
Perform a close analysis of one scene from each film and create a thesis that sues specific details from each scene to form an argument about these films as a whole. Use visual tools for analysis on your chosen scene to generate specific details. Evolve your thesis by exploring cinematic details from the scenes. Make sure there are comparisons and differences explained when talking about cultural significances or symbolization. The correct way to do this comparison is to isolate an interesting similarity within a difference or an interesting difference within a similarity between the two films.
Include the two sources as ways to advance your claim in your central thesis.

Evaluation:
Specific, focused, complex thesis that engages evidence
Analysis of specific details from two film scenes with limited plot summary
Demonstrates significance of comparative analysis
Purposeful engagement with and integrated sources
Coherent organization to illustrate main point
Clear understanding of films cultural context
Correct spelling, grammar, ect.

A successful paper will showcase a cultural critic that stays focused on specific details. An unsuccessful paper will simply provide a summary of each scenes plot.

Title: Comparative Analysis Paper

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1303 Sources: 1 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Comparative Analysis Paper

Instructions:

This assignment involves reading and assessing the contrasting arguments of two different authors on the same issue(I will be faxing the readings to the writer). Writer should read the readings I will be providing, and assess the contrasting arguments of the two different authors.

This paper should answer the question, which of the two authors’ view are more biblically supportable, and why? Thus a significant component of this paper will involve your own interaction with biblical teachings in order to analyze the writings. Do NOT devote and space to summarizing the authors’ views. Immediately state whose view you believed to be more convincing, and spend the rest of the paper unpacking why you believe that to be the case.

Note: The paper has to include God’s providence. Here are three givens that should be touched within your paper: (1) God’s Sovereignty, (2) Human Freedom, and (3) God’s goodness. Also I would like you to interact with the following Biblical Scriptures: Genesis 50:20, Act 2:23-24; 4:27-28. (These verse play side by side in regards to God’s sovereignty, Human Freedom and God’s goodness.) Also more general text you can interact with are: Psalm 115:2-3; Psalm 139:16 and Proverbs 16:4. You are also welcome to include more additional Biblical passages that will help assert strongly your argument.

Please note that the analysis paper, in particular, is specifically an academic (as opposed to creative) writing assignment. This does not mean that you papers should be sterile, but emphasis here is primarily on the quality of biblical argumentation you demonstrate.

1. The paper must be typed in 12 pt, Times New Roman font, double space and with one inch margins on the top, bottom and the sides.

2. For the comparative analysis paper, you may use parenthetical references to cite the author’s ideas. In this case, since you will be interacting with two authors, your citation will need to include the respective author’s name as well as page number, so that I will know which author you are engaging in a particular citation, e.g. (Augustine, 24.)

3. Generally speaking, do not fill up your paper with quotations, either of Scripture, or of the authors you are reading. Restate their ideas in your own words, and use a parenthetical reference to give credit for the idea either to the Scripture passage or the book you are referencing.

4. Be specific and avoid overgeneralizations. Don’t say, “This book was utterly convincing throughout,” or “This book is an utter failure. How would he so blatantly miss the obvious meaning of Scripture at every turn?”

5. DO NOT assert a biblical/theological claim without supporting that claim and rationale. NO unsupported assertions.
? Ex. 1 (Blanket Assertions Without Providing Biblical Support) – Do not make as assertion like, “The NT clearly endorses infant baptism” without making a biblical argument to justify that claim.
? Ex. 2 –(Appeal to Presumed Common Knowledge Within One’s Theological Tradition)- Do not simply say, “Everybody knows that once you’re saved you’re always saved, so you can’t lose your salvation.” Proved the point from Scripture.
? Ex. 3 – (Appeal to Personal Experience to the Neglect of Biblical Discussion) – Do not simply say , “I speak in tongues, so clearly the gift of tongues is available today” without supporting the claim biblically.
? A final word here- oftentimes, listing one verse will not suffice to justify a particular claim, since a number of Bible passages have to be harmonized to account the totality of biblical teaching on a give topic

The sources used should only be those of the readings. Please include a works cited page with correct MLA documentation.
