The objectives for this reading are to know your audience and what type of Leadership is required. Finding an effective leader or creating one is not easy and requires and effective process to seek the right leadership skills. Then the leader must do the research to define their community's need. No efforts can truly succeed and sustain themselves without good information. Where does that information come from, how is it collected and how will it be used? Therefore the one reading deals with getting the right leader; while the second reading is how the leader should collect, interpret and utilize this information. You should gain knowledge of the processes and how to better utilize them from this assignment. The three key objectives for this week are:

Reflecting on the yours and the community's value systems
Analyze issues from different perspectives
Contributions of different cultures
The big idea for the week is do your homework on the community you serve.

From the Phillips reading one can draw the following information;

Recognize there are no one size fits all solutions out there. Leadership varies by circumstance, need, motivation and so forth. Someone who is an excellent leader in one situation may not be in another and visa versa. So when identifying leaders make sure they are well suited to the challenges at hand. Further, they may need to be changed as the community evolves.

The next reading deals with sense of community and community building. Again, the leadership needs to well aligned to the community in question or they will not be able to community build effectively. One issue that presents is that individuals define themselves in more one community. There are theory and research models to utilize and follow. The basics include;

Please remember that unlike market research in the for profit world you are tasked with having an expected higher level of accountability. Secondly, you are more often dealing directly with human subjects, as such your research models must be valid and compliant with research standards.

The Miller reading is intended to provide an example of what happens in community organizing. In the write up feel free to share you experiences and how they do or do not parallel the experiences of Miller. The Cnaan readings reflect on the powers that are in place in every community. The key objective is to learn how to approach and deal with those elites in your community.

In Chapter 5 you are introduced to Community Elites and Power Structure. Some things you may already know or will discover in your communities. Foremost, it is about the money and the perception that it is doing something the money source supports. Many people are involved in obtaining funding and community commitment. You need to learn who controls or influences what decisions. Yes we have to work with the rich, the politicians and the governments often. Each has different agendas for how they want funds utilized. In smaller communities you will find that many of the elites, politicians and officials are very interwoven and connected to each other. So, in effect, when you are working with one presume it may be shared with all. The text tries to differentiate between elites. There are corporate elites, local community elites (old money/new money).

The Chapter 21 reading focuses on how one can leverage social capital and leadership to achieve the organizations goals. Several approaches are presented and a framework on how the steps are interconnected,. As you read the material you may notice that community models are discussed in greater depth (figure 21.1). You as a leader need to educate the community. You must also connect the dots of the community structure to optimize your efforts. Consider and encourage coalitions. partnerships or alliances to use resources more effectively.
