It is important to remember we all have core beliefs/schemas which are derived from our early experiences. However, when these experiences are negative they can set the past for many of the maladaptive schemas which operate throughout life. While the Schemas may have served a purpose during childhood (ex: Be anxious or hyperventilate before dad gets home because of pending abuse). Later in life this anxiety may be counterproductive to current functioning.
