Essay Instructions: Classical music bibliography paper on Cosmos Trio. A flute, viola and harp group founded in 2004 by Katherine Borst-Jones, Mary Harris and Jeanne Norton. The three founding musicians are all members of the Pro Musica Chamber of Columbus,Oh. On Aug. 4th 2008 I went to a concert they had at St.John's Evangelical Church in Columbus, Ohio. They played 4 works; Petite Suite(2007),Beautiful, Sweet, Delicate for flute, Viola, and Harp(2005),Trio in Four Movements for flute, Viola and Harp(2006),and A Columbus Triptych(2006) Prof.'s Requirements:Please cite the orchestra (Trio)time and place of the performance. Introduce the composer and the style and outline carefully the major elements or characteristics of that style. The first half of paper should focus on the composer and the style. At this point you should not yet have discussed the performance. Second part begin to describe the music heard and interpret the movements or other divisions of the composition. Then identify the features that made it baroque,classical, etc... Finally add your own experience of the music. Include a bibliography of at least 3 sources other than the textbook and art class notes at the end of the paper.

One concert report is required for this course. The concert need not be a performance of classical music, but please select a live concert of music other than the kind you usually prefer. Professional or amateur performances, free or with paid admission, are acceptable, but the concert must be open to the public.

In your concert report answer these questions in full sentences:

1. Name of performer or performers, including soloists, and what instrument or ensemble was involved.
2. Date and time of performance and its duration.
3. Specific location of performance and cost of admission.

Referencing only the readings indicated below (and your textbook chapters 15, 16, AND 17 of Culture & Values, the alternate volume for this section), your second essay will contrast and compare the various styles of music in Europe during the 15th through 18th centuries. First discuss the differences and similarities between Baroque, Classical and Romantic Era music. Then, discuss several composers of each era. As an example, the Baroque period is associated with composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and George Frederic Handel, to name a few. Best known composers of the Classical period are Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, again to name a few. A few well known Romantic composers include Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn and Frederic Chopin. Elements to explore include:



1-the styles of each period

2-influences of the composers

3-innovations attributed to each period

4-musical genres of each period.
