Essay Instructions: Analyze an everyday movement in terms of the body systems and functions involved. You may choose the scenario from the list below, or you may think of a different scenario that involves multiple body systems.
Assignment Instructions
For this assignment, you will analyze an everyday movement in terms of the body systems and functions involved. You may choose the scenario from the list below, or you may think of a different scenario that involves multiple body systems.
Sample Scenarios:
? Ballet dancing
? Running a race
? Eating your dinner
? Driving a car
? Playing soccer
? Walking the dog
? Figure skating
? Playing basketball
? Riding a bike
? Putting away the groceries
Your assignment should include:
1. A written narrative that describes, in detail, the scenario you have chosen. This description should include the senses and movements involved to complete the activity.
2. A discussion of how each of the body?s systems is involved in the actions described. The systems that are required in your analysis include:
? The skeletal system
? The muscular system
? The integumentary system
You are encouraged to discuss other system involvement, such as the circulatory, nervous, and digestive systems. Other systems may also be discussed, but are not required. This discussion should be detailed, describing how specific organs interact in order to complete the actions described in the narrative.
SAMPLE STUDENT ASSIGNMENT
This is a portion of a sample assignment, in order to give you an idea of what is expected in this assignment. It includes the narrative description of the activity and descriptions of only two of the organs involved in this action. Because watching television is used in this sample activity, you may not use the same scenario in your own assignment.
Body Systems Involved in Watching Television
When I want to watch television, the first thing I do is walk over and sit down in my favorite chair. I dig through the cushions to find the remote control, but find my brother?s stinky sock instead. I keep digging, feeling crumbs and a pen under the cushion, but then I finally feel the remote with my hand. I pull out the remote and press the red power button to turn on the television. My brother not only leaves the stinky socks under the chair cushions, but he also leaves the television?s volume set much too high! I turn down the volume and then begin to scroll through the channels. My favorite show is a rerun, and I remember the ending, so I find a show that looks like it might be funny and I begin to watch and laugh.
There are many different body systems involved in the process that I described. Walking over to my favorite chair involves several different systems. To be standing and walking involves the skeletal system and muscular system. The skeleton supports the body, and the skeletal muscles attached to the leg bones work together to get the legs to move. Muscles are paired up into complementary pairs so that when one muscle contracts, it gets the bones (connected to joints in the knees, ankles, and hips) to move a certain way. Contracting the opposite muscles gets the bones to move a different way. The nervous system is also involved, allowing me to see where my chair is and where I want to walk. My senses send signals to and from the central nervous system about what I see and feel?
Note: This is a portion of a sample assignment. A complete assignment would continue on from this point.
