Title: 18th c decorative botanical art

Total Pages: 10 Words: 3104 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Thesis topic ?
How the botanical and scientific discoveries of the 18th century impacted decorative arts, culture and society in England during the mid to late 18th century ? specifically - Textiles, and Painting. How these discoveries created a ?Botany society? that crossed gender and status lines and included women.
Please discuss several of the important expeditions to the Bahamian islands, South America, New South Wales, etc. mounted by scholars, scientists and physicians (ex. Hans Sloane). Please discuss/cite detailed descriptive passages on expeditions and their results.

Plants were brought back for study and forced growth in greenhouses from these expeditions. Briefly (no more than 1.5 pgs)discuss the history of the greenhouse in late 17th century and 18th century England and its importance in the study of Botany and "botany societies".

Show the connection between the discoveries, the publications and the decorative arts culture by citing detailed examples of period textile patterns and paintings.
Artists accompanied the explorers to record the flora and fauna that was discovered. These artists recorded botanical illustrations that impacted the decorative ornamental trends in England during the 18th century. Their work was published in illustrative text ? both popular and scholarly, for example; accurate, highly detailed flora representations were used in Philip Miller?s ?Figures of Plants? published between 1755 and 1756; ?The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands? Mark Catesby's published in 1771; ?Familiar Introduction to Botany?, Priscilla Wakefield London 1816. Paintings by Mary Moser, and textiles patterns by William Kilburn were all based on exposure to these botanical publications and in reaction to the societal trend towards science and discovery. Please discuss in detail with examples.
European influences such as the engraver Johann Wilhelm Weinmann and of course, Carl Linneaus should also be quickly explored.

****This is not scientific research on Carl Linneaus or his contemporaries, they should be mentioned, but the focus is on English culture and decorative arts.
