Total Pages: 6 Words: 2203 References: 0 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: The book that I have chosen to discuss for this assignment is Louise Erdrich''s novel "Tracks".

Please read the instructions below for a detailed account of what is needed. As the professor is very picky and strict, PLEASE follow the instructions very carefully! Thank you. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me.

Instructions:
In your essay, you will need to write a short summary of the book you selected ("Tracks") and place it within the context of 20th century American Indian history. You can focus on a topic of your choice, but you must relate this to a theme we have covered in the lectures and in the readings from class.

**Here is a list of the readings to reference**
1. Frederick Hoxie''s "Talking Back to Civilization"
2. Brenda Child''s "Boarding School Seasons
3. Hurtado and Iverson''s "Major Problems in American Indian History"

Please note: THIS IS NOT A BOOK REPORT ASSIGNMENT! What I mean by this is do not give me a detailed description of the book in your essay. There is no need to provide a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of your text. You are writing to interpret the main ideas that the author seeks to communicate in the work, and to make CONNECTIONS between the material covered in the text to the people, events, and circumstances that we have dealt with in the course.
We have discussed various topics including the assimilation policies of the early 20th century (land loss and boarding schools), the notion of the "vanishing Indian" and the collecting of American Indian objects by museums, and the influence of Christianity. The assignment provides the opportunity for you to link the novel to these themes. It also provides an opportunity to look in depth at a topic that we have touched upon only briefly.

(((For the novel "Tracks" it will be very important to discuss the land loss - especially the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887, and the Reservation Boarding Schools.)))

Since this is a novel, you may want to also address these questions: How do historical lessons in novels and autobiographies compare and contrast with those available in conventional historical works? What is the value of novels and autobiographies in understanding the American Indian experience? Are ther any limitations?
