This week?s readings focus on biodiversity. The impacts of biodiversity loss have been under investigation for decades, but only recently have scientists summarized what is happening to global biodiversity, and what this loss means for humanity.

Please answer the following questions in full and complete sentences in 12pt type. The total length of this assignment should be between 1.5 and 3 double-spaced pages.

Chapin et al. 2000

1. What human-caused change is predicted to have the largest effect on global biodiversity? What level of biodiversity does this paper choose to focus on, and why?
2. In general, what does research seem to say about increasing diversity?s effect on ecosystem function? Provide one example from the reading of altered functioning in response to biodiversity.
3. Can a single species (other than humans) affect a whole ecosystem?s functionality? Give one brief example.
4. Describe one ?trophic cascade? mentioned in the paper. Who caused this cascade?
5. List ways in which biodiversity prevents invasion.
6. Describe one example from the paper, where alterations to biodiversity have had negative consequences for society.

1. What caused researchers to start investigating the effects of biodiversity loss?
2. What is BEF, and how does it differ from BES?
3. Summarize (in 3-5 sentences each) the ?Six Consensus Statements?.
4. Summarize (in 3-5 sentences each) the ?Four Emerging Trends?.
5. What is the effect of optimizing ecosystems for resource production?
6. Briefly summarize what the ?Balance of the Evidence? is.


Synthesis (focus on these questions, as they will come up in class discussion as well)

1. How has the field of biodiversity science evolved from Chapin?s writing in 2000, to Cardinale?s writing in 2012?
2. The planet currently holds 7 billion people, and is expected to grow. Why is understanding biodiversity so critical?
