Essay Instructions: American Exceptionalism is an idea that has been used to describe the unique nature of the USA.Koh argues that "the USA exemplifies [particular] virtues in their pures form. That is why it is exceptional. And that is fact that has been recongnized by Europeans for centuries" (17). The essay should briefly summarize the debate between Koh and Bromund, and then, referring to at least two other authors in the reading set, take a position on the debate whether or not American Exceptionalism is a set of "pure" virtues, or if it is "both good and bad." The position I am taking is that American Exceptionalism is a set of "pure" virtues.

Important Note->>>Writing About Literature: Analysis vs. Summary
When we write about literature we must be careful to avoid plot summary. Assume the audience has already read the story when writing. When analyzing a story, begin with a close reading and discussion of the tale. One method is to begin by discussing a paragraph or a section of the story. Then use quotations to support ideas. A final Warning!! Be sure to discuss underlying meaning and not just the sequence of events or plot summary!
Consider the following slants which could be part of the analysis:
the uses of Romanticism
the implications of historical situations
the different versions of the American dream
the casting of the American woman as the villain
the use of characterization
the nature vs civilization
