Read Hamric et al. chapters 3 and 4 and Buppert, chapter 1. The authors (Hamric et al.) contrast basic nursing practice and advanced practice nursing in several different places in chapter 3.

1. Identify at least 3 of the contrasts/differences and discuss why these contrasts/differences may or may not be accurate. (There are at least 10 contrasts identified).

2. Next, the authors (Hamric et al.) further expanded on the characteristics of APN practice in addition to clinical expertise which the authors considered a central ingredient of an APN’s practice.

a. Identify the six characteristics by which the direct care practice of APNs is distinguished.
b. Which two of the six distinct characteristics do you think would be the most difficult to develop? Give rationale for why you identified these two. Be sure that your response is clearly and thoughtfully presented

3. There are many excellent statements in this chapter. Two specific statements (that I liked because there is incongruence in the manifestations of these in the APN community) are “Leadership is not optional in APN practice??"it is a requirement” (p. 92) and “Advanced practice nursing is a value-added complement to medical practice, not a substitution for it” (p. 92). Dr. Susan Apold always has excellent insights into the advanced practice issues. She is a good example of leadership and speaking for APNs and the nursing profession. The news moderator wanted to know “Why do nurses want to play doctor?” which is a frequent question posed by the public.

4. Skill Acquisition Forum: The information presented of the Skill Acquisition model by Dreyfus and Dreyfus is probably very familiar to you as an RN. Take the time to read about this model with application to your new APN role.

a. Identify the premise of the skill acquisition model and the process involved, i.e. what are the various levels
of the skill acquisition model. As an RN, what do you believe is your skill acquisition level? Does the information presented in Figure 4-1 seem to depict reality? Or is it just a good conversation figure?

5. Role Concepts: a number of role concepts exist in all of our lives. On Hamric et al., page 99, Table 4-1, many role concepts are presented.

a. Choose three (3) of these role concepts, give the definitions and give examples of each of these role concepts from your own current life, i.e. within the last few months, weeks, days.

6. You are now or soon will be experiencing role transition which in graduate school will involve role acquisition of the APN role (p. 102).
