Topic 1: Motivate the Nurses
You are the manager of a psychiatric unit at a community hospital. The hospital has faced budget cuts over the last 2 years as a result of decreased reimbursement. Your unit used to be a place where nurses wanted to work, and you rarely had openings. However, recently due to the budget cuts several of your nurses have left to work at the larger city hospital and there is a nursing shortage in your community. Nursing dissatisfaction is at an all-time high. Over the last month, several of your nurses have stopped by your office in tears and very frustrated. They are telling you they do not like their job anymore, the temporary workers do not know what to do, and they do not have what they need to care for patients appropriately and safely. You know there is no funding coming your way. However, perhaps there are things you can do to make the situation better for your staff.
Examine strategies for creating a motivating environment. Decide what you can do as a unit manager to support your staff. Avoid using what is list in the chapter but write a detailed plan that can be quickly implemented and is feasible.
Topic 2: Managing Conflict
Continuing the discussion from Topic 1, one of your nurses on day shift approaches you angry that she is assigned different patients each day with float nurses caring for her patients of the previous days. She states that permanent nurses on the floor should be allowed to pick their own patients for day and the floats get who is left over. Upon talking to the head nurse making assignment, you find that he believes the nurses are uncooperative because it is his responsibility to see that all patients receive adequate care. Although continuity of care is important, the head nurse feels that not all the float nurses can care for particular types of patients. Now everyone is irritated.
Devise a workable plan that will accomplish the goals of each party. How will this plan be implemented?
