Essay Instructions: 20th Century- Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse

Research should cover the following areas (not necessarily in this order, but in these proportions):

1. Biographical information (approx. 2 pages) giving a succinct overview of pertinent events in the life and writing career of the author.
2. Discussion of the novel (approx. 5 pages) giving a brief overall summary and followed by an in-depth analysis of important themes, characters, techniques, etc.
3. Examination of the novel's significance and its relationship to the period in which it was written (approx. 3 pages) e.g. Victorian and 20th century literary and social themes

Topic and discussion with regard to Victorian age and changes in the 20th century can be broad, covering the more obvious changes such as disenchantment with the war and disappointments of progress/industrialized society. Try to use a few citations that are not only available online (such as journals, books, etc.) Thanks so much for your help.

Essay Instructions: Over the first half of the 20th century architects re-envisioned the city and to some extent their visions became a reality in the decades following World War II. This first paper should explore the social context of the time and explain how the forms they invented were a response to the conditions of their era. The architects/planners you should include are Antonio Sant?Elia, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Their visions followed concepts that were very different from one another. Le Corbusier envisioned urban centers that would have a density far greater than Manhattan but within a park setting. Frank Lloyd Wright envisioned a city with a very low density set in the countryside, not a new kind of suburb but a new kind of city. The paper should not be a criticism of their ideas (in fact that will be the topic of your second essay) but you should in the last section mention how and why their ideas were emulated in a few-well chosen examples from the post war era. To get you started I?ve listed the main projects and a few sources below.
