SKILL SET OVERVIEW

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

A personal success plan can serve as the foundation for a successful career. In fact, there are so many qualified professionals in the workforce today that a personal success plan is more of a requirement than a luxury. With this in mind, coupled with the training I recently received, my personal success plan was prepared in various stages. I first identified that my career ambitions and working style place me in the adhocracy field of Mintberg's model. I then used this as a background that offered other insights that are also included in my personal success plan including items such as working to be more disciplined in different areas of my professional requirements as well as learning to better manage conflict with personality types that are not naturally compatible to my own. Furthermore, I also include a section that outlines my dedication to continuous education that will ensure my training stays relevant to the continually evolving microenvironment.

BACKGROUND

DO I LOVE MY JOB?

It is 5:00 A.M. On a Monday morning. The alarms sounds and one reaches over pressing the snooze button to get those "five more minutes." Now it is 5:15 A.M. And you realize the five minutes have quickly turned into 15 minutes. The early morning workout awaits you as you have a full schedule ahead of you prior to work with getting the kids ready for school and yourself ready for work.

It is now 7:40 A.M. And the early morning workout is finished, and the kids are ready for school. You are now headed out the door to drop the kids off at school and head to work. You arrive at work at 8:45 A.M. To work your typical "9-5." You realize you are 15 minutes early for work, so you decide to take a minute to yourself to think about the building you are about to enter and conduct your work. You either have a positive view, as you know you are about to have great days, or you have a negative view as you know you hate your job.

For a portion of the working world, this is the routine that is conducted prior to work. A person's work environment has a major impact on an individual's outlook when it comes to their everyday routine. One has to ask, is, do I Love my job? A person's personality determines the type of work environment that may be fitting. Routine work, variety, and simplicity will play majorly into the type of work environment that may be fitting to a person's personality. The work structure has been broken down into five different categories by Mintzberg.

MITZBERG'S CATAGORIES

A simple structure is typically for beginners in the workforce. It has the basics, top managers and operators. A machine structure tailors towards low skilled high specialized jobs. It is for people who like routine. A professional structure refers to personnel who have a skill set and is on their own in the work environment. It is for people such as doctors and lawyers. Divisionalized form tailors vice presidents of organizations. These are personnel who want a little power but not sole responsibility. Adhocracy is a work environment such as making a movie. It does not require one skill. It consists of personnel in different fields who come together for a single product.

Myself personally, I have been in the work environment for approximately seven years. I am not one for routine work. Being as the simple structure is tailored towards personnel who are new to the work environment, simple structure is not fitting. Currently, I would place myself in the Adhocracy field. I work with personnel from all different areas of the world with different skill sets who come together to conduct base defense operations. I specialize in one area while my counterparts specialize in another. Despite our specializations, we all come together to create one finished product.

Managers in the adhocracy field would seek my type of skill set. Managers in this field tend to look for personnel who are not one dimensional and can work well with others. Knowing a little about a lot will aid one in working in this type of environment. My knowledge along with the skills I have acquired over the years will aid me in the adhocracy filed.
In conclusion, each field that has been broken down by Mintzberg is fitting for personnel with different personality types. Adhocracy is a style that is fitting for the knowledge, experience, and personality I have. Although I believe I can work in any other field, adhocracy is best fitting.

PERSONAL Management PREFERENCE

Being employed for over seven consecutive years helps one to identify they type of work environment that is best suiting for them. Rather it is working in a consolidated area, working with customers, or working in high stress related occupations, it is important for one to know, understand, and be comfortable in whichever type of work environment that fits their personalities. In Organization design: fashion or fit, Mintzberg tells the reader of five different configurations in which an individual's work personality will cater to. A simple structure is typically for beginners in the workforce.

It has the basics, top managers and operators (Mintzberg, p. 2). A machine bureaucracy tailors towards low skilled high specialized jobs. It is for people who perform well with routine. A professional bureaucracy refers to personnel who have a skill set and is on their own in the work environment. It is for people such as doctors and lawyers. Divisionalized form tailors vice presidents of organizations. These are personnel who want a little power but not sole responsibility. Adhocracy is a work environment such as making a movie. It does not require one skill. It consists of personnel in different fields who come together for a single product (Mintzberg, p. 2).

Having over seven years work experience and knowing how a work environment operates, takes me out of the simple structure. As stated above, simple structure is tailored towards personnel who are new to the workforce. A machine bureaucracy tailors towards personnel with a low skill set and is a very routine like job. This is also non-fitting for the amount of knowledge and skills obtained by myself over the years. A professional bureaucracy requires one to have a specific skill such as a lawyer, doctor, or engineer. These type workers are one dimensional in my eyes. A lawyer knows only things that are involved with law. A doctor only knows how to be a doctor.

My skill set of being a manager and in charge of different organizations during total different things is very broad, which is not fitting for professional bureaucracy. Divisionalized form tailors towards vice presidents of organizations; people who want some power but not sole responsibility. Having an exciting job where I am able to bring all of my knowledge and a group of individuals together to accomplish one task is best fitting for me. It is important for every working individual to understand these configurations and which ones do not fit their personality. Understanding these configurations can and will aid in happiness on the job, positive attitudes and behavior, and emotions being intact while on the job.

SUCCESS PLAN DISCUSSION

SKILL SET OVERVIEW

There are many aspects to my character that I believe will allow me the resilience necessary to further my career in the near future. Having over seven years professional work experience has allowed me the perspective to gain a feel for my organizational capabilities. I understand that I am most effective when I can devote myself to an exciting career that will keep me intellectually stimulated by providing perpetual challenges. I am more comfortable with a changing landscape that is not routine and can be described as dynamic in nature, which would be defined as adhocracy by Mintzberg in Organization design: Fashion or Fit (Mintzberg, p. 3).

The inner drive that I possess to has brought to a place in which I must actively develop my career with forethought and resilience. Although I clearly understand my organizational and job function preferences, I also understand that I need to improve my effectiveness when the situation is something other than stimulating. That is I could focus more of my attention on personal organizational skills and the completing the tasks that I find rather routine in an efficient manner so I can further development my weaknesses. The ability I have to possess power and influence will be something that can aid me in my growth. Power, which is defined as the capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others can be a strong tool in the workforce (McShane, p. 290). Mixing power and influence together, one has the capability to grow and go far in organizational.....
