Vacation Memories

In my short life I have had the good fortune of being able to travel widely. This has allowed me to experience a variety of locations and a variety of climates. Each has offered something different and few of the places that I have visited have left me with the feeling that I did not want to return but nowhere has left me with the feelings of wonder and peace that the Island of Maui did. For a brief few days, I was left with the impression that this must be what heaven is like. Sitting on the beach watching the tides flow in and out feeling the comfort of warm, soft breezes I was free to clear my mind of my worldly tribulations. Listening to my favorite music on my iPod only added to my feelings of relaxation.

The Island of Maui is not the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is not necessarily the most picturesque but there is something about the overall appeal of the place that creates the illusion of being in a place of perfection. With its beautiful white sand beaches on one side and mountains on the other one is exposed to the best that nature has to offer. Although the air temperatures are often in the 90's it feels much more comfortable as the combined breezes flowing off the ocean and descending from the mountains provides a feeling of cooling comfort.
Living in a crowded metropolitan area where even the shortest trip can bring one to the edge of road rage driving down the nearly deserted streets of Lahaina or Hana is an absolute delight. No beeping horns, no swerving vehicles, and few lights or stop signs. Driving is again a pleasure where one can enjoy the scenery and not be concerned about one's physical welfare. Purchasing gas in Maui can be depressing as prices are remarkably higher but due to the short distances that one must travel less gas is used.

Not only are the days better on Maui than any place I have ever visited but so are the evenings. Sitting quietly on the lanai at night one is surrounded by the same breezes that are so refreshing during the day but the darkness of the night and the presence of the white caps on the ocean as the waves flow toward the beach leave one feeling cleansed and renewed. The only sounds present are the waves striking the beach and the palm leaves from the trees rustling together. The birds that have been flying about all day have retired….....
