Katherine Mansfield's short story "The Garden Party" and John Cheever's short story "The Swimmer" both go at presenting readers with ideas related to upper class feelings toward society in general. Although the both belong to the upper class, the protagonists in the two short stories have different understandings of life and they take on different attitudes when they are provided with the chance to put across their sentiments toward individuals who are of a lower social status. In contrast to Neddy, the protagonist in "The Swimmer," Laura, the central character in "The Garden Party," appears to be better acquainted with the importance of being human and would likely criticize the former on account of his conceited nature with regard to his old friends and with the situation he is in.

Neddy is, much like most individuals in Laura's family, inclined to look at the world from the perspective of a wealthy and self-centered individual.
From the very first moments when the "The Swimmer" starts, one is likely to observe how Neddy tends to emphasize his social status and how he chooses a rather arrogant method of demonstrating his character. People like Laura appear to look beyond their condition and are unhesitant about performing acts that are not extravagant. She feels that it is more important for individuals to concentrate on trying to put across humane attitudes instead of being obsessed with their social status.

Laura appears to have a perfect understanding concerning the difference between a situation that requires celebration and one that demands grief. Neddy is obviously in a bad condition when he starts off with his cross-country journey, taking into….....
