Parole:

The concept of parole has usually been misunderstood by many people because of their failures to distinguish it from probation. Parole has developed as a concept or means of lessening prison overcrowding while rehabilitating prisoners through ways that help them to secure their release through good behaviors. The process of parole basically involves the supervision of a convicted offender after serving part of their sentences in prison and being permitted to live in the community through supervision. Since the parole period is usually based on the recommendation and decisions made by the board of parole, the infringement of its procedures is likely to result in the re-imprisonment of the criminal. Therefore, there are three main roles of parole i.e. lessening jail term based on good behaviors, supervising the criminal during their parole period, and release of individuals with uncertain or indeterminate sentences.

Concepts of Parole:

Parole can be described as a concept that allows prisoners to serve the final part of their sentences in the community based on the clearly defined conditions that are determined by the board of parole and enforced by the parole officer. In essence, the existence of this concept in the criminal justice field and system is for the purpose of conditional release from prison. However, parole does not release a convict from the legal custody of the state since it only releases the person from custody. In the United States, the parole has developed during the 19th Century from the various practices of conditional pardon in England, Australia, and Ireland.
Generally, parole consists of three major concepts i.e. grace, contract, and custody that are aimed at reducing jail overcrowding and rehabilitating the convict. The concept of grace in parole is where the criminal could remain incarcerated through the government expands the privilege of release (Cole & Smith, 2006, p. 521). On the other hand, contract basically enters an agreement that the government enters with the prisoner in which the criminal promises to adhere to the specified conditions in exchange for being released from imprisonment. The final concept of custody is where the convict is still the responsibility of government though he/she is released from jail. This concept is largely because parole is primarily an expansion of the correctional programs into community.

Typical Conditions that Affect Parole:

Each parolee released from prison to the community for community service through parole supervision usually has certain conditions of parole that are imposed upon the release of the convict from prison. The typical conditions that affect parole are generally classified into two categories i.e. The conditions of parole and special conditions. While the conditions of parole basically entail the written rules for the parolee to adhere to, the specific conditions are additional written regulations that enhance the chances of the convict to finish parole. The conditions of parole can also be regarded as the standard regulations of the concept and practice whereas the specific conditions are unique to each parolee.
