Healthcare Organization Statement of Purpose: Kaiser Permanente

The mission statement of Kaiser Permanente is to provide affordable, high quality healthcare services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. The values statement is "to be the model of quality health care in the nation by being the best place to work and the best place to receive care."

Analysis Of the Mission And Values Statements

The Kaiser Permanente mission statement concentrates on the two most critical characteristics that many American face today with regard to healthcare, and that is affordability and quality. Sadly these two characteristics continue to auto correlate in the Untied States with the lowest priced healthcare affordable by the middle class often being the worst in terms of quality. Kaiser's bold mission statement reflects a compelling call to action by members to be of greater serve to the communities they serve, which is one of the most valuable aspects of a successful mission statement overall (Collins, Porras, 1996). Great mission statements concentrate on creating a shared sense of urgency and service to others and rely on vision statements to crystalize all organizational elements to that objective (Stewart, 1996). These two components of affordability and high quality healthcare are essential for Kaiser to deliver value to its served patients.
The values statement is specifically designed to create a unified organizational culture that is a strong catalyst for internal performance and service to external stakeholders of Kaiser. A value statement must seek to unify the many internal processes and programs, people and resources to the specific expectations and needs of its served customers or constituents (Stewart, 1996). This is exactly what Kaiser is attempting to do with the value statement they have created. The focus is on having their employees so empowered that they can deliver the best quality healthcare of any provider. Two ways Kaiser can continue to underscore its values is to provide unlimited training reimbursement for employees when the training is directly applicable to their specific jobs, and to invest in a continual program of customer satisfaction measurement and index executive pay to this index of customer satisfaction. By taking these two steps the company can further fulfill the values statement and see its impact on performance.
