The Power of Language in Communication

The ability of humans to speak and utter sounds that creates meaning for understanding of human society is an important skill and capacity that distinguishes us from other living species here on earth. Possessing the power of language, we as humans are able to express our ideas and thought through it, and in the process, conducts communication and interaction with other people as well.

That is why I feel fortunate to be able to speak two languages: English and Taiwanese. Possessing the skill and knowledge to speak two languages allows me to interact with people who belong to cultures that similarly, speak Taiwanese and English. By being bilingual, I am able to converse easily with people, making initial encounters and daily interactions easier and manageable for me. Furthermore, bilingualism provides me with a lot of opportunities to conduct business communications and transactions, especially now that business transactions between Asian and American and European countries become more prevalent.
Bilingualism also offers work opportunities, such as being a translator for organizations or becoming public representative for Taiwanese-speaking or English- speaking individuals or people. Being communicatively competent does not only benefit me as the speaker, but also by assuming the role as a mediator not only between people who not only speaks two different languages, but also belong to two different cultures. Thus, acting as mediator between two cultures creates understanding and tolerance of each culture's differences.
