He wants everyone to experience the ability to feel passion and deep emotion, regardless if it brings tears or laughter. This, he believes, is much better than feeling nothing at all. The Giver and Jonas decide to leave the community and take with them a baby, who can provide a future and begin life anew. The conflict of the story is that Jonas wants to change the world by releasing the memories, but does not know if people will be able to handle the emotions and even if they want to change their mundane lives at all. The story ends, but with a mixed and vague resolution.The reader must decide whether or not Jonas and the baby Gabriel reach a better world where they are free to remember and feel emotion. Are they imagining that they have reached Elsewhere, or are they indeed at their destination? As the sled slides down faster, Jonas knows for certain that they are waiting for him and Gabriel. "For the first time, he [hears] something that he [knows] to be music. He [hears] people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he [has] left, he [thinks] he [hears] music too. But perhaps, it [is] only….....
