I think that the originality report was fairly straightforward. It contained two basic ideas, both of which are easy to understand. The first idea is that it is hard for anyone to come up with a truly original concept. Everyone who writes or thinks is influenced by different aspects of his or her culture or by other writers. However, while this may be true, in academic writing it is extremely important to cite your sources. Academic writing is different than writing an email to a friend or even a coworker. When using a quote from someone, it is very important that the student writer note in parentheses the author, date, and page number (if applicable) of the source that he or she used. When using an idea from someone else, even if the idea is not a direct quote, the original author should still be cited, to avoid charges of plagiarism.
Different academic subjects have different concepts of what is 'common knowledge.' Common knowledge is not necessary to cite. But if there is any doubt, it is better that the student cite a source than omit a citation. No one was ever accused of 'over-citing' in a research paper, but it is easy to forget to cite small words and phrases that were still derived from another document. This is why good note-taking, revision, and proofreading is so essential, so the student can make sure that all sources….....
