Varieties such as fashionable sport wear, high, low and mid tops along with shoes custom designed to the foot of the players have come up ("Tennis Shoes History").

The tennis shoe manufacture industry has come a long way as well. There are a large number of companies competing against each other to produce the best quality of shoes for their customers. Some of them include Nike, Lacoste, New Balance Adidas, Puma, Converse, Mizuno, Asics, and Reebok. Some of these have managed to gain a lot of reputation internationally. They cover all kinds of sporting requirements such as those of running, soccer, baseball, rugby and water sports ("Tennis Shoes History").

The shoes which are specifically meant for the sport of tennis are of three major types. They are classified into Hardcourt, Grass and Softcourt based on the terrain being used. Hardcourt tennis shoes need to have patterns such as herringbone and dimples etched on them for a better traction. Their upper layers are prepared using synthetic forms of leather. They are equally suitable for clay surfaces as well owing to their strong grip. Softcourt tennis shoes on the other hand are primarily aimed at clay surfaces. A herringbone arrangement provides the best hold without causing the shoes to break down the clay. They have a perforated softer material on their upper layers allowing optimum entry of air. Tennis shoes for grass courts have a dimpled surface to prevent the players from sliding or falling down. Sudden movements over slippery grass can lead to injuries.
These have their upper layers made using tough leather and have an overall low cut design to ensure the maximum ease of movement ("Guide to Tennis Shoes").

There are a few basic factors which should be considered before buying tennis shoes. The availability of ventilation, sole design, options for comfort and arch areas are some of those. The sole design and patterns etched on them determine the level of safety that it provides. Shoes which lack a decent grip should be avoided. Tennis shoes should have well placed holes on them to allow air to reach the feet. This, along with the foam placement in the interiors is responsible for comfort. Good quality foam near the heels and on the edges is necessary for sports which go on for a long time. The middle part of the shoe should have a sufficient arch to fit the feet and allow the player to move easily. An effective combination of these factors will help any player achieve the most of their abilities ("Guide to Tennis Shoes").
