The breakthroughs that I see do not occur as often as I would hope, but I have noticed that I share drive and determination with my mentor. We both believe that working hard is the key to success, and that helping troubled teens requires an open heart and an open mind. Moreover, the caseworker I shadow is one who works specifically with juveniles living in detention and foster care facilities. I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve the Baltimore community in this fashion and I intend to pursue a career in exactly that field: juvenile care.

Children and adolescents who grow up in unstable home environments do not have enough safety nets or support systems that can help them thrive. Not everyone can enjoy a loving extended family as I did; when my mother passed away I relied on my aunt for stability and support and she adopted me as a symbol of her commitment to me. However, my situation was lucky.
Many of the young people I work with at the Baltimore City Department of Human Services have no family members in the community at all, let alone ones they can count on for love and nurturing. In those cases, community leaders and social workers provide a backbone of caring. We are the ones who offer guidance, counseling, and opportunities for self-expression. The community is in fact obligated to care for those in need, especially at-risk youth who must channel their energies toward creative, social, and academic pursuits instead of criminality. I wholeheartedly believe social workers can improve community health and social welfare as well as improve the lives of individuals.
