Nurse Manager Skills:

The process of becoming a successful nurse manager entails multi-tasking across limitless issues on a daily basis that range from focusing on patient safety difficulties to solving disputes among the nursing staff. However, practitioners serving as nurse managers may find it difficult to have adequate time in the day to accomplish all the activities. The professional role of nurse managers is crucial in the delivery of quality health care and enhancing the effectiveness of these practitioners. Nonetheless, nurse managers need to have certain skills in order to enhance their efficiency in their respective job duties. Some of the necessary skills set include personal and professional accountability, career planning, personal journey disciplines, reflective practice behaviors, and leadership skills. These professionals can identify their strengths and weaknesses in these areas through evaluation that can be done using the Nurse Manager Skills Inventory that was developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives.

Evaluation of Strengths and Weaknesses:

The Nurse Manager Inventory Skills document contain competencies and skills that are essential for nurse managerial practice despite of the professional's educational level or titles in various health facilities ("The AONE Nurse Executive," 2011). Based on the document, my competencies in personal and professional accountability can be rated as competent experience or skill. Currently, I hold an Associate Degree in Nursing and pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the same field that helps to me to stay up-to-date in this field. In the current practice, the nursing environment enables the nursing team to begin actions that produce results, especially positive patient outcomes, while they are held accountable for these actions and results.
The actions of the nursing team are based on ethical guidelines within the organization that support the scope of practice and nursing standards in the facility. However, the main weakness is that I'm not involved in a suitable professional association that promotes professional and networking development.

In relation to career planning, my main strengths include the fact that I have a clear understanding of the job description and requirements in the field. In this case, the responsibilities involve provide direct care to patients and acting as a role model or mentor to other professionals in the nursing team. This has enabled to me to teach these practitioners additional nursing techniques and behavior, career advice, and answers to some critical questions. The commitment to continuing education provides a platform for planning and knowing my future in this field as I stay up-to-date with the ever-changing needs in healthcare. Under the personal journey disciplines, my main strengths are action learning and reflective practice though the weakness is shared leadership or council management because of the lack of involvement in a professional association. In the reflective practice reference tenets or behaviors, the strengths are holding the truth, diversity as a means to wholeness, discovery or potential, and maintaining commitments to oneself.
