Over the course of the project, I took the responsibility for ensuring that all of the bureaucracy and paperwork regarding the needed permits for the addition's plumbing, electric work, and building materials remained in order. I became more fluent in the legal language as well as the technical aspects of a major construction effort. After the addition was built, I had to ensure that the work passed its inspection within the time of the contract -- and check for the company's own peace of mind that the work was sound from the bottom of its foundation to the top of its rafters.

This experience brought about an intense sense of self-actualization, as I gained confidence in my own leadership abilities and competence. Nothing could be taken for granted, and it was my duty to check and double-check even the work of 'experts.
' Because of my thoroughness, my ability to speak out when others were unwilling to do so, I saved my company's face and reputation and prevented it from being exposed to unnecessary fees, and penalties. I am also proud to say that the customer was not merely pleased with my work but even became a close friend of mine, and referred many other individuals to the company.

Going beyond one's job description, checking and double-checking, and occasionally taking an unpopular stance are all the attributes of a good manager and a good leader. I was able to serve my company and secured a valued customer for life. Through an act of direct service I learned an important lesson about having faith in my own….....
