Needs assessment: Physical therapy

Needs assessments in physical therapy are typically conducted during the first session a patient embarks upon with the therapist. Before meeting with the patient, the physical therapist will review the client's existing records to understand why he or she is in physical therapy, and what the client's goals are for the therapy. The physical therapist must have an idea of how long the course of therapy will be, to plan accordingly in terms of what types of exercises will be required. During the first session, the physical therapist will perform a series of diagnostic evaluations, to target areas of critical weakness and strength. The therapist will also interview the client. This will better clarify patient needs and goals for the therapy. "The physical therapy evaluation includes your history, observation of your posture and movement, and palpation -- using the hands to feel and 'see' the problem area. Testing for muscle strength, range of motion, and other tests may be used. Your physical therapist then plans a treatment program geared to meet your individual needs.

Not all assessments are for the purpose of designing an entire physical therapy program, it should be noted. Physical therapists may perform assessments to determine if a patient is capable of returning to work, or if an employee is capable of specific job-related tasks.
