Major advantages and disadvantages of Jean Watson's Theory in clinical practice

One of the major advantages of Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring is that it is a holistic system of care. Watson's Theory of Caring stresses the need to treat the whole person through caring and openness. It embraces scientific theory, but does not believe that science alone can accomplish all of the goals of nursing. In modern medicine, quite often patients complain that there is insufficient regard for how their illness and treatment affects their lifestyles. For example, when deciding to take a drug, a patient may want to discuss how the side effects will impact his or her life and weigh the potentially negative effects against the benefits provided by the medication, rather than simply be told to take the drug. A patient that must make lifestyle adjustments to control his or her diabetes may want the ability to discuss how dietary changes and exercise will be feasible, given his or her income and lifestyle.
Unless the nurse is open, accepting, and caring towards the patient, it is difficult for the patient to fully open up to broach such topics.

The downside of Watson's Theory is that it is so ambitious in its scope of caring, nurses in contemporary society may not have the ability to devote such a large amount of time to individual patients. Additionally, some nurses feel that the stress upon 'caring' in Watson's theory can be so great that it can mask some of the scientific and empirical demands of nursing. Some distance from the patient is required to make judgments about care, and although Watson's theory is grounded in psychological and medical science, in practice it could damage the hard-won respect for the nursing profession in society because of its language of caring.
