In response, the leader may decide to institute an employee stock plan that links shareholder value with long-term rewards for its employees so that they can share in the benefits of growth and appreciate the connection between their individual performance and the retailer's performance (Boulgarides and Cohen, 2001). This is an involvement tactic which comes from the leader's reward power. In this instance, ownership through stock has a good chance of success because people have a tendency to work and fight much harder for things that they own (Boulgarides and Cohen, 2001).

The last example is an organization that wants to become more socially responsible. It would like its workers to contribute to this effort and the leader has asked the employees to join the company's Make a Difference program as a volunteer, explaining why it is important to give back to the community. This is an enlistment tactic. Because employees are not obligated to comply with the leader's request, this tactic is facilitated through referent power.This is likely to enlist volunteers for the program if the leader is likeable. Just giving a reason is sufficiently persuasive (Boulgarides and Cohen, 2001).

Thus, as this paper discusses, the CEO has various sources of power at her disposal. However, in addition to understanding her power base, she will need to match her sources of power and issues requiring resolution to the appropriate influence tactics. In this way, she can intelligently apply her power to encourage the type of behavior she is trying to promote in the organization.
