Intimidating communication is definitely present within my work place. Student nurses and new staff have often been the victims of bullying that is coming from actual nursing and facility staff that have been on location for long periods of time. Such situations have been witnessed by not only the student nurses working within the facility, but also by the patients and senior staff members

Patients see the lateral violence first hand, as they watch older staff members hassle younger, newer nursing staff. The patients have helped the administrative staff narrow done the primary staff members who are the source of the lateral violence on the other newer nurses. Essentially two nurses in their middle fifties who have worked with the facility each for over five years feel the need to constantly harass new staff members and watch over them to a point which makes them feel insecure and uncomfortable within the context of their work environment. Some patients have reported witnessing these two individuals using threatening body language from nursing staff as they try to rush the newer staff, who are still often trying to master the essentials of their job. The two older nurses will stand very closely behind newer staff and make jokes about how the newer staff even got out of a nursing program.
One patient told administration that one of the two harassed one of the male nurses, asking him where in China he got his education. Senior staff members have been inundated with complaints from newer nursing staff. Moreover, the facility administration has had to deal with high turn over rates, costing the organization and the facility much needed money constantly retraining new staff.

The best possible solution would be to rid the facility of the problem starters. Terminating the two worst offenders would not only rid the facility of the mot negative influences, but it would also help set an example that the executive and administrative staff simply are not going to condone such behaviors in a facility that is already dealing with a vulnerable population. This would be a difficult decision, but the best for everybody involved.
