Detectives did not take long to discover Haigh's criminal past mainly involving instances of fraud and theft. After obtaining a search warrant, detectives descended on Haigh's workshop in search of any trace that could help them unravel Durand-Deacon's sudden disappearance (Newton 109). What they ended up finding was shocking.

In addition to a dry cleaner receipt belonging to Durand-Bacon, police also discovered papers that referred to Haigh's first and second murder victims -- the McSwans and the Hendersons (Wier 165). Upon further search, detectives also came across a sludge which when subjected to further analysis revealed not only a denture but also a number of human gallstones. The denture in this case was according to Wier later on found to belong to Duran-Deacon (165). A few other incriminating items including but not limited to a lipstick container and a number of bone fragments were also found (Gunn 34).

On being arrested, Haigh according to Newton confessed everything (109).
He was soon charged with murder although he tried to deflect the charges by claiming he had also drunk his victims' blood. However, this defense was not effective enough especially given that most of his murders had an element of predetermination. For instance, in the words of Wier, Haigh's first murder was "well planned, executed and of course premeditated" (159). Further, it is also important to note that after killing his victims, Haigh habitually made forgeries that allowed him to make financial gain mostly by interfering with the victim's estate.

In addition to the victims of murder who had already been captured by official records, Newton also sensationally claimed that he had killed more people Haigh's trial according to Newton "opened on July 18, 1949" after which the jury eventually found Haigh not only guilty but also sane With that, he was sentenced to death with his hanging according to Newton taking place "on August 6, 1949"
