I asked them what is done for Bobby at school, and they said that inclusion has been very beneficial for him (Nelson, 2001). With a paraprofessional he has been able to stay in his home school, and importantly, continue to attend the school his friend attends. They said that the school had to work hard to learn about almost all aspects of Bobby's needs: they didn't know much about Asperger's, or working with a paraprofessional, but they feel that for the most part the school staff understand his unique needs. They have seen huge improvement, and so can see that they should continue to cooperate with the accommodations Bobby needs.

The one area they expressed lingering frustration with was with Bobby's earlier education. They said that preschools really didn't know how to deal with children who had special needs (Bricker, 2000). They would try to talk him out of being upset instead of letting him move away from the group to calm down, and he would often become so disruptive that either Judy or Dave would have to bring him home. Fortunately with their unique work schedules, they could do that, but feel that preschools need to learn more about children with special needs so that sort of solution isn't necessary.
