Hildegard Peplaus, first of all, that person and that is how she tried to shape the young ones entering her field. She did not share the aspirations of the fortunate who filled the ranks of the profession in her time. She, instead, saw that nursing and the medical professions as sharing common goals and services, but each with a different and separate health mission in addressing and meeting the health needs of the people. Hildegard was a controversial figure of her time as well as ours. She was both exalted and vilified in her 50-year career, but she nevertheless, has left an indelible impress on the profession she loved and served to her very best and to the end. This devotion and her excellence earned her the distinction as the Psychiatric Nurse of the Century (Holden).
