Friday Night Lights is a movie about the Permian Panthers, who are a high school football team in Odessa, Texas. The town is racially prejudiced and the economy is bad. The one exciting night in the week is Friday night because that is when the Permian Panthers play their football games. Because of problems on the team and the ways they face the problems, the Permian Panthers teach lessons in character, discipline, team work and also show some things that are wrong with football.

Reflective Portion

"Friday Night Lights" shows how the good qualities of character, discipline and team work can be developed in football. Dictionary.com says that "Character refers especially to moral qualities, ethical standards, principles, and the like" (Dictionary.com). It also says that "Discipline" is "behavior in accord with rules of conduct" (Dictionary.com). Finally, Dictionary.com says that "Team Work" is "cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause" (Dictionary.com). The team built character after the tailback, Boobie Miles, broke his knee by deciding to play even though the season was supposed to be terrible. The players knew that the town still relied on them, so they did not give up. They trained and played their best even though they would probably lose. That also helped them to develop discipline because the players behaved as they were supposed to according to rules of conduct.
They were supposed to train and play hard no matter what, which they did. Finally, the players built team work because they did not do this alone: they kept trying, trained and played together for their common cause of being the best football team they could be. Their football season and all the good qualities the players developed is summed up by Coach Gains when he says, "Perfection is being able to look your friends in the eye and know you did everything you could not to let them down" (Abrams).

The character, discipline and team work in "Friday Night Lights" can be applied in all aspects of a personal life. A football player who developed character in football can show character in outside life by sticking to moral qualities, ethical standards and principles in the person's family, society and at work, no matter what happens. That person can also use the discipline learned in football in personal life by behaving according to rules of conduct in the family, in society and at work.
