This prevented the construction of a dam on the river that was going to be used to produce hydroelectricity. This is significant because it is showing how there is tremendous amounts of competition over the natural resources. Once this occurs, it means that sustainable food supplies become more difficult to obtain, which will result in food security issues. ("Water and Food Security," 2011)

To deal with these problems, many countries have begun to implement various programs that are designed to encourage the conservation of natural resources such as water. Evidence of this can be seen in Japan. As, they have been recycling waste water and using it on plants. The basic idea behind this approach is that this can protect the water table by: ensuring that agriculture and the rest of the economy are receiving the resources that it needs. The only difference is that there is no segregation of them. Instead, the farms will receive this water after it has been used by residents of the city. Over the course of time, this reduces the total amounts that are wasted.
While ensuring that the agricultural sector, is receiving the water it needs to keep up with the current growth rates. On the local level, this is taking place with individuals being able to collect and utilize their own waste water. Another option is they can sell it to the community. In either case, both have control over how the resources are being used by ensuring that nothing is lost. ("Water and Food Security," 2011)

Clearly, Asian countries will be facing food security issues in the future. This is because there is competition between the different sectors for natural resources such as water. As a result, some countries have been focused on conservation efforts to ensure that they are most effectively using them. This is helping to improve their food security, by making certain that farmers have access to water when they need it the most.
