Evolution and Development of Dog Species:

According to the findings of previous research, it has been suggested that dogs are paedomorphic wolves that have evolved through heterochrony. Heterochrony is described as an evolutionary technique that produced diversity through perturbations of the timing and rate of development, which needs very minimal genetic innovation. Consequently, this evolutionary technique is considered to be the most common mechanism in the generation or production diversity (Drake, 2011, p. 204).

There are also other researchers that have been conducted to examine the essential principles used in genomic analysis of domestic dogs in order to understand the genetic changes that have taken place during the domestication of these animals. These studies have largely demonstrated that the evolution of dogs comprises of two principle modes of evolution. The basic principle mode is the fixation of distinct metamorphosis of significant impact in individual heredities that are then crossed to several breed groupings. Notably, this primary mode accounts for a huge percentage or portion of the prominent diversity of dog breeds.
The second mode that contributes or generates diversification incorporates the selective breeding of dogs within distinct functional or phenotypic groups. As a result, this second diversification causing mechanism enhances certain group attributes like tracking or heading. The progressive selection through this mechanism tends to result in distinct genetic structure in fruition trees to an extent that the phenotypic and functional groups gather genetically (Wayne & von Holdt, 2012).

In relation to dog genome, the origin of nuclear genome in these species can be traced from Middle East and Europe. These findings are based on haplotype-sharing analyses rather than mtDNA analyses that have previously and commonly been used to trace the origin of nuclear genome in dog species. As a result, Middle Eastern or European wolves are regarded as the primary basis of the nuclear genome in dogs. This concept is further supported by sequencing evaluation or analysis of IGF1 that has been the main target of size selection in small breeds of dogs.
